Music Cufflinks: Which Guitar, Trumpet, Drum or Note Pair Suits Which Man

You know which man this is. The one with the guitar in the spare room, the record collection nobody's allowed to reorganise, or the season ticket to the same small venue. You want cufflinks that say so, without turning up to the wedding as the support act.

That works. Here's what we sell in the music range, what each pair is actually like on a cuff, and how to wear one without it looking like a stage costume.

The rule: one loud thing, and it's the cufflink

Nobody reads your cuffs from across the room. They see them when you shake a hand, lift a glass or check your watch, and that's exactly the point. It's a detail that rewards a second look.

So keep everything around it quiet: a plain white or pale blue French-cuff shirt, a suit in navy or charcoal, a tie with some texture and no argument in it. Pick the tie first. Everything else follows from it. If the tie is already doing a lot, the trumpets can wait for another day. The longer version of this rule is in How to Wear Novelty Cufflinks for Men.

The safe pair: musical notes

If you're buying for someone whose taste you're guessing at, start here. The Silver & Black Music Note is the smaller of the two at 19mm by 15mm, close to the size of an ordinary plain pair (most cufflinks sit around 15–20mm across the face, as we say in the complete cufflinks guide). The Silver Music Note is a little larger at 25mm by 18mm and all silver, so it reads as a shape rather than a symbol until someone looks twice. Either one goes with a work shirt, a wedding reception and a dinner. If he has never worn anything but plain silver, this is the pair that won't feel like a leap.

Guitar and double bass: long, slim, and easy to place

These are the longest designs in the range, and it changes how they wear. The Electric Guitar and the Double Bass are both 33mm by 12mm, and the Acoustic Guitar is 29mm by 14mm. On the cuff they sit as a slim vertical shape, not a round face, so they look deliberate rather than busy. The electric is silver, black and white; the acoustic keeps to black accents on silver; the bass adds a red accent that picks up a burgundy tie nicely.

They're at their best on an evening out, a gig, a birthday dinner or a wedding reception. For a strictly traditional office, we'd choose the notes.

Trumpets: the jazz-club pair

The Silver Trumpet and Gold Trumpet are identical 29mm by 12mm shapes in two finishes, so the choice is about metal, not design. Silver works with grey, charcoal and a steel watch. Gold suits navy and brown tailoring, and looks intentional beside a gold watch case or belt buckle; it clashes if everything else you're wearing is silver. Either way, keep the shirt plain.

Drum kit and DJ: the party pairs

The Red Drum Kit is the most playful pair here (22mm across, white, red and silver) and the cheapest at £9. It's a pair for a stag do, a birthday or a reception after the speeches, not the boardroom. The DJ Headphone & Turntable is 18mm square, silver and black, and detailed enough to reward a second look. It suits the best man who ran the wedding playlist, the vinyl collector who never stopped buying records, or anyone who wants a cufflink nobody else at the table is wearing.

Is it okay at work or a wedding?

Depends on the room, and we'd rather say so than promise it's always fine. Creative office, a Friday, a stag do, the reception: yes. A client meeting with a conservative firm, or the ceremony itself at a formal wedding: stick with plain silver or the notes. Our wedding guest guide and business attire guide cover that ground properly.

What £9–£12 actually buys

We won't dress this up. These are rhodium-plated brass, made as themed novelty designs. At £9 to £12 that's a nicely detailed, well-finished pair, not solid silver and not a family heirloom. It doesn't need to be either, for a cufflink that comes out a handful of times a year. Wipe them with a soft dry cloth rather than jewellery polish, and keep a pair together in the £2 cufflink gift box instead of loose in a drawer.

Buying as a gift

Check one thing first: does he actually wear French-cuff shirts? If not, cufflinks stay in the box whatever the design (see do you actually need cufflinks?). If yes, pick the instrument or the genre he genuinely talks about, not the one that's easiest to find. For a guitarist, the £8 Electric Guitar Tie Bar makes a matching gift set, though we'd wear one or the other on the day, not both. Add a pocket square and you've handed him the full look, not one item. For a wider range of ideas, 12 Giftable Accessories for Him covers the rest, and if he's more superhero or gaming than music, see superhero, Star Wars and gaming cufflinks.

FAQ

Can you wear music cufflinks with a suit? Yes. With a plain shirt and a quiet tie, one musical detail at the cuff is exactly the idea.

Do they fit any shirt? Only shirts with French or double cuffs. A standard button cuff has nowhere to put them.

What size are they? From 17mm (the drum kit) to 33mm long (the guitars and bass). The guitars, bass and trumpets are slim and long rather than round.

Which pair should I buy if I'm not sure? One of the musical note pairs. They're the closest to a plain cufflink and go with almost everything.

Will they arrive in time for a specific date? We won't promise a date here. Check the delivery estimate shown at checkout for your address before you buy, especially for a wedding or an event with a fixed day.
